Jenny read the bible, she believed.
in the evening after work she liked to sit at home; fix herself a cup
of tea.
she found comfort and security, in the words of luke and john
and while the candles kissed the darkness and the night came on
her eyes were - open wide;
her eyes were - open wide.
one night in the streets below, a young man lookin' up
sees the light within her window, he decides to try his luck
bursts into the room, and he stares at frightened eyes
and as he blows the candles out, she begins to cry,
but her eyes are - open wide;
her eyes are - open wide.
the neighbours say they never saw or heard, anything at all
the policeman looks so tired as he escorts her down the hall
he says: "you've had yourself a real bad, long night; you'd
best get some rest"
she shuts the door, picks the bible up and holds it to her breast,
her eyes are - open wide;
her eyes are - open wide.
the rabbit died and jenny cried for the life that was inside her
conceived in fear but born of love, the child arrived last winter
and though the doctors tried their best when the blood began to flow
she kissed the child, kissed the cross and - she just let go --
the child went to her brother's; back home on the farm,
they shower him with hope and love and they keep him safe from harm
but late at night when they dim the lights and a house becomes a home
he gazes at the picture of someone he's never know
his eyes are - open wide
his eyes are - open wide
his eyes are - open wide.
